  My friend Frank owns a group of auto dealerships, and he is interested in building a loyalty program to retain his customers. He understands that retaining his current customers costs less than acquiring new ones, and his overall business philosophy caters to servicing his customers.  He’s ready to make the leap into a full-fledged loyalty program, but he’s not quite sure how a loyalty program will drive behavior and motivate his customers to action.
 

In order to help Frank out, we thought it might be easier to focus on one Member of his loyalty program—let’s call her Donna.
 

Donna purchased her vehicle from one of Frank’s dealerships, however she doesn’t service her vehicle there.  Instead, she visits the mom-and-pop service station near her house, because she thinks it’s cheaper.

Fortunately, one of Frank’s associates got Donna’s email address at the time of purchase.  Since Donna is Frank’s customer, Frank has permission to email her and occasionally sends her service special coupons, which she carries to her service station to match.
 
 
Frank spent less than $100 in net costs for the reward program for
Donna’s business, and gained a long-term customer.
 

Now that Frank has a loyalty program, he emails Donna asking her to enroll, and offers her 5,000 Bonus Points to do it. Donna thinks this is a pretty good deal, and since it costs nothing and her service station can’t match, she enrolls.  She promptly is awarded the points, and has $50 saved toward her next new or used vehicle.
